Worship is so essential to the life of Christians that when we say we are “going to church,” what we most often mean is that we will be attending a worship service. But what exactly is worship?

Worship services are more than the sum of their parts. They include listening to the words of the Bible, singing, praying, being nourished at Christ's altar, meeting old and new friends, but they are so much more.

We believe that God encounters people in their worship services, that God is present with them in a special way when they quiet down and open their hearts, minds, and bodies to God.

If worship services are done well, they help people to grow spiritually. At times, this means that people will be comforted; at other times it means that worship services might challenge them.

Worship helps people to cultivate God's spiritual gifts within them - traits like humility, kindness, love, patience, generosity, compassion, forgiveness, and self-control.

Worship has the ability to inform us and transform us. When we worship, we remember who God is and who we are to be as God’s people.  Worship helps us to see ourselves, our neighbors, and God's creation through the eyes of God's love.

We gather in worship to be transformed by God, not to preserve traditions for their own sake.
And that's ok, since churches should not be museums in which the past is preserved for posterity.  Rather, churches are communities where imperfect, burdened, and hurting people are welcome and where God offers healing and wholeness to them.

Worship must be relevant to the culture of which we are a part.   Worship must respond to the events of the world, but transcend those events in light of the Good News of Jesus' death and resurrection.

Worship is at the heart of everything we do at Advent - all other ministries flow out of our worship, and in turn those ministries also inform our worship services, in some form or another.
